Box 433, Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin 150001, PR China b Department of Optoelectronics Engineering, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan 430074, PR China Received 4 August 2003; received in revised form 26 August 2003; accepted 27 August 2003 Published online: 18 September 2003 Abstract LiMn Al O (0:0 6x 6 0:10) intercalation powders have been synthesized by mechanical alloying followed by rotary heating. 2x x 4 The precursor of LiMn Al O has been prepared using LiOH H O, MnO , and Al O by mechanical alloying, which ensured a 2x x 4 2 2 2 3 high level of homogeneity in the chemical composition of the precursor and resulted in a reduction in the synthesis temperature and heating time. Highly crystallized LiMn Al O powders were obtained by subsequent rotary heating of the precursor at 600 C for 2x x 4 3 h. Rotary heating enhanced the experimental control in particle size distribution of the final products. The synthesized LiMn
