Free and Easy Wandering, a part of the philosophical work of Zhuan Zi, is taken as a Taoist canon. There is a paragraph in the article reading as “When the jiaoliao (tailor) bird nests in the dark forest, it requires no more than a single branch. When the muskrat drinks from the river, it does no more than filling up its belly.” Taoism deems that human consumption should only satisfy basic needs rather than having extravagant possession. In the Han Dynasty, Taoists set up “public houses” at the sides of main roads in Sichuan Province, where they left rice and meat free for consumption by passers-by. Bulletins were posted in the houses that if the passers-by ate or took the food more than they needed, ghosts would haunt to penalize them and made them ill. Naturally, it was a religious belief, but what was implied is an admirable idea of checking greedy and wastage. Taoist thoughts leave another inspiration on the contemporary mission of building up a conservation-minded society: respecting and cherishing everything on earth. Taoism holds that man and all things on earth have a common origin which is “Tao”. Chapter 42th of Lao Tzu says, “The Tao gives birth to One. One gives birth to Two. Two give birth to Three. Three give birth to all things.” Everything on earth evolves from “Tao”. Everything on earth stems from “Tao;” relies on “Tao” for existence and shares the same “Tao”. As a result, Taoism believes that “all visible things possess Tao’s essence”. “Tao” is the ultimate source to create all values. As all things on earth are simply
