Earth Science Fr on tiers , 005, 1 (4) :481488 Abstract: Subtle oil/ gas reservoirs have become one of the main explorat ion targets in China. As petroleum ex ploration goes into a more mature stage, the search for subtle oil/ gas reservoirs expands into areas w ith more complicated condit ions. The accumulat ion and preservation of petroleum in deeply buried subtle traps, the structure of the unconformities in relation to subtle oil/ gas reservoir distribution, the reasons for t he loss of petroleum in t he former subtle traps , and for the preservation of adjusted subtle oil/ gas reservoirs have become the difficulties of petroleum explorat ion and the frontiers for scient ific research. The exist ence of active source rocks and reservoir rocks w ith relatively high porosity and permeability in the deep part of basins is fundamen tal for petroleum accumulation in deeply buried subtle traps. Advances made in recent years on t he kinetics of hydrocarbon generation in overpressured environments will improve our ability to predict the maturity and hy drocarbon p
