The switch would be from the Astra 2A satellite used by Rupert Murdochs Sky, to the adja cent Astra 2D satellite. But Geoff Baines, of What Satellite and Digital TV magazine told Ne w Scientist: Its bizarre. Of course it makes sense for the BBC to try to avoid paying Sky. But this is not a workable solution. The transmitters on Astra 2A send signals to much of continental Europe, but the BBC only buys copyright clearance to transmit programmes, sports and movies to UK homes. So th e BBC currently pays Sky about £17m a year to use Skys signal crambling system. About a million British viewers access BBC programmes using a free decoder smart card, w hich plugs into their Sky receivers. Everything possible is done to stop people ordering car ds from abroad, although a black market does exists. The BBC argues that because the transmitters on the new satellite, Astra 2D, are tightly f ocussed on the UK, people in continental Europe will not receive a strong enough signal to watch programmes, and the scrambling can be abandoned. The BBC plans to stop using S kys services from May. Drastic changes A BBC spokeswoman says: It is theoretically possible that people in Europe will make the drastic changes needed to pick up the weaker signals. But we think in practice the number s will be negligible. They will need humungous dishes costing 1500 Euros. However Astras own technical data clearly show that the transmitters on the 2D satellite r each well into continental Europe, meaning the unscrambled signal could be easily picked u p.
