Abstract : T he poly vinyl chloride( ) / clay nanocomposites were successfully prepared through melt
intercalation process T heir structures and properties were studied with. -ray diffraction and trans-
mission electron micrographs T heresults proved that poly vinyl chloride melt could be intercalat-. ( )
ed in original clay a littlewhile could be well intercalated in organically modified clay T hepresence.

of the alkyl ammonium cations in the galleries of organo clay rendered thehydrophilic clay organic
T he role of alkyl ammonium cations was to lower the surface energy of the inorganic clay and im-
prove its wetting characteristic with poly vinyl chloride( ) . Mechanical properties testing showed
that the nanocomposites were superior to poly (vinyl chloride) in terms of impact strength, heat dis-
tortion temperature, solvent transformation resistance without sacrificing its tensile strength.
