情态意义与语篇分析 Modal Meanings and Discourse Analysis 厦门大学 杨信彰 xzyang@xmu.edu.cn Introduction Discourse studies is the discipline devoted to the investigation of the relationship between form and function in verbal communication. Style is one of the topics that concerns discourse studies. It refers to the different ways to say the same thing. There are three categories of studies on style. Scholars regard style as a possible form for a specific content, as a choice of specific patterns, or as a deviation from expectations. In speaking or writing, the speaker/writer has a number of different possibilities in phrasing what he would like to say. To Renkema (2004), the style-as-choice approach is suitable for determining how the situation affects choice. From a stylistic viewpoint, we can safely say that each lexicogrammatical choice the writer/speaker makes in what he says is motivated and carries its own ‘stylistic’ meaning. Every linguistic choice that is made is determined by a wide variety of contextual considerations, such as the genre of text, time, place, the nature of the communicative context, etc. These choices may be considered as stylistic markers, and can be realized on particular levels of the structure of language. The terms style and register can be used interchangeably in many studies. Register is preferred when the formulation and the relation between language use and situation is discussed. The concept of register in systemic functional linguistics can be a good guide for us to deal with the language that is used in each profession. Registers cover the total range of our language activities in life. Halliday et al（1964）defines register as a variety of language distinguished according to use. We can understand the functioning and effectiveness of register when we refer to the various situations and situation types in which language is used.
