Methods ： Between February 2012 and December 2015 , twelve stage T 4 patients w ith thoracic esophageal squamous c e ll carcinom a accepted the exploratory thoracotomy before chem oradiotherapy (e xplora tory group ). Nineteen patients sim ply accepted chem oradiotherapy (n o n - explora ­ tory group ). A ll the patients of the non - exploratory group accepted concurrent chem oradiotherapy or sequential che ­ m oradiotherapy . Five patients of the exploratory group accepted radiotherapy alon e,an d the others accepted concurrent chem oradiotherapy or sequential chem oradiotherapy . R adiotherapy method was inte nsity m odulated radiation therapy (IM R T ) w ith the dose of 36 〜64G y . Chemotherapy regimens consisted of taxanes and pla tin u m . Results: O bjective response rate o f exploratory group was 41.7% , m edian survival tim e 8.0 m onths , 1 - year survival rate 16. 7%. O nly one patient survived more than 2 years . The incidence of esophageal fistu la in exploratory group was 66.1% .
