30 1 Vol.30 No.1 20132 Journal of Suzhou College of Education Feb.2013 The Protection and Restoration of Suzhou’s Ancient City Wall ZHU Jian-gang, SONG Gui-you, TAO Li (Management School, Suzhou Vocational University, Suzhou 215104, China) Abstract The protection and restoration of the Suzhou’s city walls have been a complicated problem involving the protection of the cultural relics, culture psychology, economic development and city dwellers’ life, since the wall was demolished in the 1950s. The different types and features of Suzhou ancient city wall embody the diversity of current situation and complexity of the protection and restoration. At the present time, the consensus has been reached that Suzhou’s ancient city wall should be protected. However, how to protect and restore needs the support of theory and practice. Since the 1980s, Suzhou has explored effectively in the protection and restoration of the ancient city wall, ranging from the local codes and regulations to the protection and restoration measures, from the renovation of the environment to the cultural heritage inheritance, from the reproduction of the city style and features to the promotion of the city image.
