A variety of failure mechanisms not commonly associated with ductile materials are active in composite crushing, including various matrix and fiber failure mechanisms, separation between fiber matrix materials and delamination. In this paper, various techniques for model delamination growth are compared using MSC.Dytran. Researchers have utilized several techniques to model delamination growth in composite structures using finite element crash codes. Among these are using spotweld elements to represent an interface, a cohesive failure model and the fracture mechanics-based virtual crack closure technique (VCCT).
