Gianfrancesco Maria Repici Departments of Mechanics and Aerospace Politecnico di Torino 10 129 Torino Italy Abstract: - The paper presents in detail three different brake caliper models, each having a well-defined purpose, and their experimental validation. These models are useful to design the brake caliper and to evaluate its effects on the whole brake system in a cheap and fast way. In particular, through the implementation of one of the models in a whole vehicle Matlab Simulink model, the full optimization of the system response has been possible. Key-Words: - Mechanical optimization, simulation, structural design, modeling, experimental validation. 1 Introduction As written in the abstract above, the paper presents three different brake caliper models. The first model is multi- body; it is very detailed from the hydraulic point of view, and can be integrated in a whole vehicle model. It computes the correct caliper dynamics, including also oil volume displacements, caliper deformation, pads deformation, roll back behavior. All the tests necessary to find out data to put in the model and validate it are described: oil volume displacement tests on the whole brake, on the only caliper, on the only pads, roll back test. The second model is a Finite Element Model of the only caliper; it computes stress distribution for a structural design. The third model is a Finite Element Model of the contact between the p
