Each also symbolises a particular aspect of the junzi (noble person) in Confucian ideology. The four plants are commonly mentioned together as méi lán zhú jú (梅蘭竹菊). The pine tree (松), the bamboo and the plum blossom are also admired for their perseverance under harsh conditions, and are together known as the Three Friends in Winter (歲寒三友).
