Abstract: The structural safety fact r f axially l aded welded steel tube struts failed by brittle buckling sh uld be different
fr m rdinary steel c lumns, but all f the design c des in China have n t dealt with this pr blem. Based n the inelastic
beam-c lumn the ry, this paper calculated the l ad-deflecti n curves f c ld-f rmed welded circular and square h ll w secti n
struts by numerical integrati n technique. Taking the effects f residual stressesinitial ge metric imperfecti ns and c mp nent
plate slenderness int c nsiderati n, the p st-ultimate behavi r f brittle buckling struts are assessed. Let the reliability index
= 3. 7 f r brittle buckling struts, the design rec mmendati ns are presented.
