We should not only have a grip of their literal meaning， but also gain a good command of their connotations and cultural reflections， since the same color words bear different cultural connotations and symbolic meanings. The differences of the cultural connotations in Chinese and English stem from the different cultural backgrounds of different nations， which were conventionalized in social development. An analysis of the differences of color terms in Chinese and English may help us gain a deeper insight into the essence of two cultures and enable us to behave better in cross-cultural communications. 　　【Key words】color words； easter and western culture； symbolic meaning 　　【摘要】中西文化中表示各种不同颜色的词语很丰富。我们除了要知道它们的基本意义，也要了解它们深广的象征意义，因为它们的象征意义在不同民族语言中往往有不同的表达、不同的特点。这种不同文化之间颜色象征意义的差异是由各民族的文化历史背景不同而产生的，是在社会历史的发展中约定俗成的，是一种永久性的文化现象。从中西文化对比的角度，分析各民族文化发展对颜色词的象征意义的影响，可以使语言更生动、有趣。　　【关键词】颜色词中西文化象征意义　　1. Introduction 　　Centuries have witnessed the research on the relationship between colors and cultures conducted by human beings， the earliest of which dated back to 2500 years ago. Furthermore， large numbers of theories based on numerous contrastive studies centering on colors and cultures have sprung up during the lengthy historical periods， which strikingly serve to deepen and enhance our understanding of colors in relation to specific cultures. 　　Since the beginning of the 19th century， we have got to gain a profound and penetrating insight into the characterized relationships between colors and cultures peculiar to different nations with the development of anthropology and comparative linguistics.
