Institute of Computer Science and Technology, Peking University, Beijing, 100871 Abstract: Video surveillance plays an important role in Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). However, the state-of-art video coding technologies cannot well adapt to the drastically growing heterogeneous practical transportation systems. To effectively handle this problem, we propose a brand new solution to use scalable video coding (SVC) technologies for video surveillance in ITS. In this paper, the history, features and the trend of SVC technologies are briefly introduced, followed by the application of SVC in ITS from two aspects: 1) the storage and the management of the surveillance videos and 2) video transmission and distribution. With the practical application cases, the superior advantages of SVC in video surveillance system is clearly exhibited.
