This paper discusses some of the ethical implications of undertaking social research
(including social care research) with adults with learning disabilities and should be read in

Specialist Research Ethics Guidance Paper entitled ‘Research involving adult participants
who lack the capacity to consent’
This paper takes a broad view of research ethics and includes discussion of the historical
relationship between the academy and the category of ‘learning disability’ and the power
dynamics of contemporary relationships between people with and without learning
disabilities. It makes no claim to cover all, or even most, of the ethical issues that can arise
when undertaking research with people with learning disabilities but includes discussion of
the following areas:
• The academy and learning disability
• Understandings, definitions and terminologies
• Capacity to consent to participate in research
