From Migrated Space to Transformed Landscape ––Studies on Social Mobility and Stability of the Saisiyat 從移動的空間到轉變的地景 ──賽夏社會變動性與穩定性的探討 胡家瑜（Chia-yu Hu ） 國立台灣大學人類學系 Abstract Focusing on space and landscape, this paper aims to explore how the migration and dynamic spatial changes are represented in collective memories and responded in social practices. As a small indigenous group in the hinterland of northwestern Taiwan, the settlements of Saisiyat are dispersed around Xin-zhu and Miao-li lower mountainous area. Looking back at the regional history from the historical writings, we find that the area of the Saisiyat was situated on the shifting Chinese-Aboriginal borderlines for a very long period of time (at least 200 to 300 years). In the oral narratives of every Saisiyat clan (sinyahou), moving, migrating and encountering others are constantly recited. Other than the movement of settlements, the transformation of landscape has been another influential phenomenon in the spatial dimension of the Saisiyat life world. Since the Saisiyat territory has been noticed as consisting of picturesque mountainous scenery, it has become the most popular resort and leisure area in the north Taiwan lately. Within this area, increasing fancy guest houses, garden cafés, and other tourist facilities have been established and transformed the dwelling landscape to scenic landscape. It is generally agreed that space and landscape construct the basic stage for human actors to perceive and shape living experiences; thus, migration and transformation of life world will be factors for causing cultural crisis.
