* * * * * * * The Growth and Pains of America Building of a nation, Civil War and Westward expansion The New American Nation In 1789 George Washington became the 1st American President At this time America was a weak nations that had many internal problems → mainly looked to itself 1794 Whiskey Rebellion → over liquor tax in PA Many diplomatic problems with France and Britain as America was not respected In 1803 Jefferson made the Louisiana Purchase War of 1812 with Britain → US was able to stop the British invasion and was the last time Britain tried to fight America Growth of America In 1816 the second Bank of the United States was formed → helped to grow financial markets but not as strong as other central banks There has and still is a large suspicion of the Government in America compared to other nations 1823 the Monroe Doctrine: European powers could no longer interfere or colonize the Americas Americas first real foreign policy that showed its new power By 1840 there was a large abolitionist movement (mainly religions) to end slavery Pre-Civil War America 1848 American had a war with Mexico and gained new territory → helped further expansion west With American expansion slavery became a huge issue that almost brought war many times Compromise of 1850 (free and slave States) Effectively there was two different societies in America The more urban and free North and the more agricultural and slave South A lot of tensions and a weak Federal Government Civil War In 1860 Abraham Lincoln elected President and the Southern States rejected him because of his view that slavery was wrong On Dec. 20th 1860 South Carolina succeeded from the United States Followed by other Southern States and they created the Confederate States of America (CSA) On April 12th 1861 Southern forces attacked Northern forces at Ft.
