Zhang Zuo-lin Zhang Zuo-lin is a famous warlord in Northeast China (photo.1). All of his life has plenty of legends, and there are many kinds of evaluations about him. Some people say that he’s bad; in addition, the majority of them are people in the South China and part of Communist Party’s members. However, in the Northeast China, most of people (esp. old people) think Zhang is a hero, and people in the Northeast China respectfully call him “Marshal Zhang”. Well, what kind of this “Marshal Zhang” is he? Please let me introduce him for you. Zhang Zuo-lin was born in Hai cheng, Feng tian province (Now is Liaoning province) on March 15th, 1875. His father was a gambler, and his mother was a rural woman. During his childhood, his family was very poor, and including himself, there were 4 children in his home. Unfortunately, when Zhang was 13 years old, his father was killed by the creditor because he always didn’t repay his debt to the creditor. After Zhang’s father died, in order to solve the difficulties of the living, his mother took Zhang and his brothers and sisters back to her hometown. Between 1889 and 1894, he depended on selling buns and small ware, sometimes he helped others to treat horse and donkey because his step father was a veterinary. In 1894, the war between the Qing dynasty and Japan erupted. Zhang believe this is a chance, so he served in the Qing Army, and became a soldier in the cavalry troop. The Qing Army was defeated by Japan in 1895, and Zhang deserted from his troop. At that time, Zhang’s hometown梩he West Liaoning was a troubled place: aLocal authority wasn’t effective enough to dominate this area; scattered soldiers and bandits tyrannized innocent people. Therefore, Zhang went back to hometown and depended on his abilities to incorporate some of soldiers and bandits, in addition, he organized these people into a local constabulary.
