May 2008 The electrode gap is defined as the closest distance between anode and cathode. In the bottom left hand corner you can see a section from the cathode with the backwall, the current conductor, the cathode mesh and finally the spacer. On the right side there is a corresponding section of the anode with the Louver and the anode spacer. The electrode distance is maintained over the whole electrode area by means of the spacer system to a very narrow gap of 0.4 mm. The main advantages of a very narrow gap are a low power consumption combined with an outstanding long term stable operation, because the membrane is not sandwiched by the metal electrodes. Modification of the top section greatly improved safety during operation and stand-by by establishing a flooded element operation and a minimal internal delta p fluctuation. (click) By zooming into the upper section of the cell, where the collecting channel is located, you can easily see, that the key for the flooded cell operation is the inclination of the shoulders of the element. Thus the liquid level is always higher than the membrane. (click) Low internal differential pressure fluctuation was obtained by the special design of the collecting channels. The foamy-gas-liquid mixture enters the gap between the membrane and the collecting channels, whereby the foam is already partly destroyed. The forcing of the electrolytes afterwards through the small holes located on the upper part of the collecting channel results in an effective separation of liquid and gas in the channel. Here the delta p-fluctuations in old design without the collecting channel is compared to the delta p in new design with the collecting channel by plotting the differential pressure against the time. The level of fluctuation at 5 kA/m2 is reduced down from over 20 mbar to less than 2 mbar.
