Taking manufacturing and service sectors to represent the tradable and non-tradable sectors respectively, this study measures the relative productivity growth between the two sectors in China during 1978-2004. Using 13 OECD countries as the benchmark countries, it compares China’s “relative relative catch-up” of labor productivity for tradable sector in the period. The evidence has been found to support the linkage between the structural productivity growth and RMB real exchange rate during the period.
