Abstract Due to the f act that conevalve and rotary valve sig nal generators have such characteristics
as po sitive pulse sig nal w ith low f requencies distribution space of valve port limited by radial size of drill
string insufficient f luid supply capacities etc a reciprocating valve that can rapidly generate continuous
w ave sig nals has been desig ned On the basis of introducing the composition of reciprocating valve and the
mechanism of continuous w ave sig nal generation a mathematical calculation model of valve port shape
curve w as built and the impact of valve port shape and distribution on the characteristics of generating con
tinuous pressure w ave w as studied T he simulation and computation result s show ed that the correlation co
eff icient betw een the pressure w ave generated by the desig ned valve port s w ith valve port s on each lay er
and w ith lay ers along the axial direction and the ideal sinusoidal pressure w ave w as
