The war destroyed the system and values of the South. The Southern Americans were in despair. The conflict and contradiction of the South and the North are sharp. This paper aims at analyzing the symbols used in this short story to explore the conflict and contradiction between the South and the North in facing the fall of the values and systems. It will help us better understand the men during the historic reform. By the analysis of the symbols, we can know that men of the South suffer spiritual crisis a lot. They can not accustom to the new society. The North and the South could not be compromised. In this story, Faulkner provides us with a picture of the past glory of the South, the decline and disintegration of the old families and the old order, and the emergence of the new order. Emilys tragedy is not caused by the conflict between the old and the new order, but by the tradition of Puritanism as its core.2 Symbolic Meaning of the Griersons House When compared chronologically, the Grierson house is used to symbolize Miss Emilys physical attributes. In its prime, the Grierson house is described as white, decorated with cupolas and spires and scrolled balconies in the heavily light some style of the seventies. This description suggests that the house is built not only for function, but also to impress and engage the attention of the other townspeople. Similarly, Emily Grierson not withstanding, are dressed in a conspicuous manner. This display of extravagance is egotistically designed by men to give an impression of wealth to onlookers. Emily is regarded by her father as property. Her significance to him is strongly ornamental, just as their overly lavish home is. As
