B iotech nology Center , F uj ian A cademy of A g r icult ur al S ciences , F uz hou, F uj ian 350003, Ch ina) Abstract: Effect of S- deficiency on the characteristics of rice leaf photosynthesis was studied by usin water cul- ture. The results show ed that under the S- def iciency condition, net photosynthet ic rate ( Pn) , initial fluorescence value ( Fo) , ratio of the variable to max imum fluorescence ( Fv/ Fm) , actual photochemical efficiency ( PS ) and electron transport rate ( ET R) in the leaves decreased si nif icantly, non- photochemical quenchin coefficient ( NPQ) increased, and capability of photosynthesis decreased. Eit her destruction of PS reaction center or reversi- ble activit y loss did not decrease the PS act ivity of the leaf. Increase of NPQ caused the decrease of Fo in S- defi- cient rice, and this mi ht be a mechanism for t he rice to adapt itself under adversity of S- deficiency.
