T he results indicate that alloying layer could be produced by electrospark surface strengthening ( ESS) on T i811 titanium alloy w ith Cr 18Ni9 electrode. T hus the hardness and w ear resistance of Ti811 alloy are increased remark ably . But the hardness of Cr18Ni9 alloying layer is high w ith low ductility, so cracks easily initiate and extend into the bulk material quickly in the process of fretting fatigue ( FF) . T herefore the FFR of the titanium alloy treated by ESS is low er than that of the untreated specimen at elevated tempera ture. Shot peening ( SP) can improve the FFR of the titanium alloy treated by ESS to the level of un treated specimen.
