Sharing Geographic Knowledge: If a friend from school is new in town and they ask you where the miniature golf park is, or the movie theater or the shopping mall you could use a city map to share that kind of geographic knowledge. These maps are good for: Showing locations Showing how to get from point A to point B While we look at some examples of how and when City maps are used think about the topics we gave you for the poster contest. Which topics would you want to use this type of map for? * * * The question is: Where should the next baseball stadium be built? The analysis is: City of Yakima produced this map used to classify and display preventable crimes, analyze trends, and look for correlations between crimes and areas with “block watch” programs in place. * The question: Should the State fund an extension to the Los Angeles Freeway? The Analysis: Evaluating Traffic flow is a major issue for the California Department of Transportation. If you were recommending an extension of freeway lanes to the transportation board you would want to consider average commuter distance and time, other commuter options (subway, metrolink, buses, carpooling). * An Atlas map can be used to show the re-construction of Russia’s borders and the boundaries of new nations after the recent fall of the Communist Government. Again, think about the topics we gave you for the poster contest. Which topics would you want to use this type of map for? World hunger? This type of map will show the specific countries most affected. Volcanoes? Specific locations, worldwide, of each volcano. Earthquakes? Specific locations, worldwide, of major earthquakes.
