This location happens to be the estuary of the Yangtze River, Asias longest and most important river. The land of Shanghai is 6,340.5 square kilometers, bordered by the Yangtze River on the north, the Hangzhou Bay on the south, the East China Sea on the east and the Taihu Lake on the west. As a part of the alluvial Yangtze Delta, Shanghai is a flat land with an average altitude of 4 meters, apart from a few hills in the southwest. Over the land are many rivers, canals, creeks and lakes which provide rich water resources.
