Recent decades witnesses the popularity of television reality dating show and the change of marriage values. With the flow of intercultural communication and the spread of globalization, discussions on marriage value shifts also become important. However, comparative studies of marriage value shifts from the perspective of intercultural communication have not aroused enough interest yet. This paper aims to discuss Chinese and American adults marriage-related values in terms of mate selection, attitudes toward love and marriage, and attitudes toward sex to find out the different value orientations between Chinese and Americans. Based on value orientation theory, qualitative research method of content analysis is applied to compare and contrast the settings and the content of one Chinese reality dating show“If You are the One”and one American reality dating show“The Bachelor”. Through a thorough analysis of the samples, this study found contemporary Chinese and American marriage values shift. Chinese collectivism tends to move towards individualism, and the adults also show individualistic and equal tendency in marriage values. American individualism becomes stronger and stronger. Theses shifts not only reflect cultural-bound beliefs in marriage but also reflect the new cultural trend in marriage.Theoretically, this study broadens the research of marriage value study from the perspective of sociology, ethics and pedagogy to a new field—intercultural communication. Practically, it will contribute to better understanding of Chinese and American cultural values and improving people’s cross cultural sensitivities and awareness.
