J.M ater.Sci.Techno1.,Vo1.22 No.4,2006 Improvem ent of Ductility of Powder M etallurgy Titanium Alloys by Addition of Rare Earth Element Yong L )f, Lifang CHEN1), Weifeng ), Huiping TANG1,2), Bin LIU1) and Baiyun HUANG1) 1)State Key Laboratory of Powder Metallurgy,Central South University,Changsha 410083,China 2)Northwest Institute of Nonferrous Metals Research,Xi an 710016,China 【Manuscript received February 2,2005,in revised form May 23,2005】 465 Ti一4.5AI一6.0Mo一1.5Fe。Ti一6AI一1Mo一1Fe and Ti.6AI.4V alloys were prepared by blended elementaI powder met. alurgy(PM)process,and the efects of Nd on the microstructures and mechanicaI properties were investigated by scanning electron microscopy(SEM),transmision electron microscopy(TEM)and X—ray diffraction(XRD). 1t was found out that the addition of Nd increased the density of sintered titanium aloys slightly by a maxi. mum increment of 1% because smalI amount of liquid phase occurred during sintering.The addition of Nd shows Iittle effect on the improvement of tensile strerIgth。while the elongation is significantly improved . For example,the elongation of Ti一4.5AI一6.0Mo_1.5Fe can be increased from 1% without addition of Nd to 13% at a Nd content of 1.2 wt pct.
