ISIJ Internationai, Vol. 37 (1997), No. 10, pp. 946-955 Characteristics on Molten Steel of Agglomeration Surf ace of Various Inclusion Particles Hongbin YIN. Hiroyuki SHIBATA.Toshihiko EMIand Mikio SUZUKl Institute for AdvancedMaterials Processing, Tohoku University, Katahira, Aoba-ku, Sendai. (Received on March21, l997.? accepted in final form on Mayl6. l997) Miyagi-ken, 980-77 Japan, The behavior of various inclusion particles at inert gaslmolten steel interface was in-situ studied with a confocal scanning laser microscope, Solid CaO-AI203and solid CaO-Al203-Si02 inclusion particles were subjected to quick agglomeration to form clusters which densified and deformed later. Capillary attraction wasfound responsible for the agglomeration and densification. The capillary effect also operated between solid CaO-AI203inclusion particle and liquid CaO-Al203inclusion particle pairs, making the densification and deformation of the solid inclusion particles mucheasier. The attraction force was found to be in the range of IO1 6- IO-1 3Nfor different particles and extended to a distance of up to IOO/tm. However, such capillary attraction was not at all found between liquid CaO-Al203-Si02 inclusion particles. Even whenthe two liquid particles came in touch, merger took place only after contacting for a while, Themerger of liquid CaO-Al203particles waseven more difficult for small particles of less than 7ptm, but easier for particles larger than 24um. These phenomenaare discussed in terms of inert gas/oxide inclusions/liquid steel three-phase interfacial interaction. KEYWORDS:Iaser microscope; Iime-aluminosilicate; non-metallic inclusion; molten steel; melt surface; capillary effect; collision; agglomeration; merger; steel cleanliness. l. Introduction In our previous work,1) a strong long-range attraction extending up to 50~mwas found and detailed sequential steps of collision and agglomeration to form clusters were revealed between solid alumina and between solid aluminosilicat
