The Application of Conceptual Metaphor in English Vocabulary Teaching Introduction Base on the inadequate application in English teaching and learning in China bearing cross-cultural characteristics, the author makes a comparison do metaphors and their linguistic representations in English and Chinese. Since the close relationship of metaphor. Language and has made the similarities and differences between English and Chinese expectable, so it is devoted to making the comparison systematic by following the three types of conceptual metaphors aiming to prove that it is a practical and feasible way to teach English culture through metaphor. Base on Metaphor Theory and the comparison between English culture and the Chinese in terms of conceptual metaphors. we can use metaphor to explain the expansion and extension of meanings, to identify idioms conveying similar meanings, or reveal the cultural system of English-speaking peoples by analyzing conceptual metaphor. we can adopt a top-down way to grasp the main idea of an English reading and further acquire knowledge of a certain field. 1. An Introduction to Metaphor 1.1 Studies abroad In the broader sense, applied linguistics includes metaphor in the actual usage such as foreign language teaching and learning, children’s comprehension ability testing and illness treatment etc. Studying metaphor in the language learning and teaching is the major concern of this paper. It is generally recognized that the publication of Cameron’ Low’s Researching and Applying Metaphor in 1999 leads metaphor study into the field of applied linguistics. So, “even the study of metaphor has exploded in the last decades, little of the impact of that explosion has so far reached Applied Linguistics”(Cameron Lynne G Low.1999:77).Richard Bailey, also supports the view “conceptual metaphor…has made little impact in language pedagogy” (Bailey Richard2003:59).
