Function of English Phonetic Teaching in Middle School Abstract: Teaching of English phonetics aims at improving learner’s pronunciation and intonation. That is in one form or another included as an integral part in English teaching at different levels and of different kinds. On the basis of the observation and analysis, good pronunciation can improve the other skills of a speaker. For instance, reading, listening writing and so on, furthermore, a good command of English phonetics knowledge can ensure students’ command of vocabularies and set up students’ positive self-concept. It can develop learner autonomy as well. In this thesis, the problems of phonetics teaching in middle schools and some measures will be discussed and show the necessity and measures to strengthen English phonetics teaching in middle school. Key words: English; self-concept; phonetics teaching; measures I. Introduction In the stage of basic education, the overall object is to cultivate the applicable ability of comprehensive language of the students. The knowledge of phonetic, vocabulary and grammar is the bases. It belongs to the basic knowledge and skills of language. In China, English phonetics teaching is mainly completed in the elementary step of English teaching. In elementary school, students at three or four grade begin to study phonetics, then, get systematically study at junior school. In this phase, phonetic teaching covers the whole knowledge of phonetic at junior school and students should understand and use it after learning the phonetic. In the period of senior high school and university, students will be strengthened the knowledge of phonetic and have the benefit of mid-term examination and college entrance examination. But in recently years, due to defining and classifying the sound of words is not test, English teacher and students don not pay much attention to English phonetics teaching in middle schools.
