A Brief Comment on Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities ------The Humanitarianism reflected in the novel I Introduction ? A. The main view of Dickens’ humanitarian. Charles Dickens was a typical humanitarian, who expressed his humanirarianism completely by his novels. His humanitarianism focused on morality as well as it based on morality. He advised people to be mercy and human, and he was a good example of humanitarian. For an instance, in A Tale of Two Cities, he showed deep sympathy to the poor .On the other hand, he strongly condemned the feudal aristocrats’ behavior. And he also held a greatest esteem for the love of the human being. Dickens believed love was always more powerful than resentment. In his opinion, no matter the person was rich or poor, if his behavior agreed with morality, it should be prised. If not, then it should be criticized. Therefore, facing the contradiction between the aristocrats and the poor, Dickens firmly believed the contradiction could be solved by the great love of the human being. In short, the view of Dickens’ humanitarian could be summarized as this ——“be humanitarian and love others”. ? ? II Textual Analysis ? A. Background It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness . . . Dickens began A Tale of Two Cities with this famous sentence. It described the spirit of the era in which this novel takes place. This era was the latter part of the 1700s and the peasants of France began one of the bloodiest revolutions in history. In the novel, the poor were far below the upper classes, the rich did nothing to help, and for fear that the poor would want to better themselves when they worked as cheap labor. The poor suffered from overcrowding, hunger, and repetitive labor, and long hours of work. Poor peasants were exploited greatly by the aristocrats and they led a terrible life. On the contrary, the aristocrats shared luxurious material plundered from the poor. What
