So people always try to avoid causing the unpleasantness of the two communicative sides and damaging their relationship, they use roundabout ways to express ideas and exchange information instead. Euphemism is a common phenomenon when people use language, which is not only a social language phenomenon, but it is also a cultural phenomenon. In this paper, the present observes English euphemism from linguistic, sociological and psychological aspects. Having a good understanding of the formation and social function of English euphemism and the English language culture can avoid many conflicts in the process of social communication. The thesis falls into three parts. It gives the definition of the English euphemism so that we can understand this thesis better. And then the author expresses the formation of the English euphemism from rhetorical means and semantic means. The rhetorical means include metaphorical transfer, ellipsis and personification. The semantic means include loanwords, understatement and widening or narrowing of meaning. At last, the social communicative function from evasive, polite, cosmetic and tactful function. T
