Depression
Depression New Deal Great Depression TIME:1929.10-1933 PLACE: New York Whole world SYMBOL: Great Crash The core of the problem: It had been the immense disparity between the country’s productive power and the American people’s ability to consume. The Life Many banks , shops and companies closed down. Millions of people lost their jobs. Agriculture got worse and worse. Great quantities of milk were poured into the river , and many products were destroyed while the people went hungry and unemployed. The New Deal Content: Recover, Relief, Reform At home: many public projects were launched to create employment through a huge increase in government responsibility. Crops were destroyed and agricultural production was cut down to stabilize the falling farm prices. The big industries were also compelled to make reforms. Roosevelt also took some measures of “social security”, paying pensions to the old, unemployed and the injured. At abroad: Roosevelt took efforts to consolidate the old markets and to conquer new ones under the cloak of the “Good Neighbor Policy” Nature: Roosevelt’s “New Deal” did not change the capitalist system but helpted to improve it. Importance: It relaxed the economic crisis, made some concessions to the working people, stopped the national form collapsing and especially prevented the U.S. from becoming a fascist state such as Germany, Italy and Japan. The Roosevelt Government carried out a progressive foreign policy against fascist aggression and wars. * * * * * * * * * * * * * Black Thursday (1929.10.24) The New York Stock Market failed. 图中的牌子上写道:“100美元可买下这辆轿车,在股市上丧失了一切,急需现钞。” In the presidential election of 1932, Franklin D. Roosevelt, a Democrat, defeated the Republican candidate and became President. The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today. Happiness does not depend on how many fortune, but to success and activities of the mind reeled. by Roosevelt 在巨大宣传画下排队领取救济金的美国
