Summary of Methanol Methanol is the simplest alcohol, and is a light, volatile, colorless, flammable liquid with a distinctive odor very similar to, but slightly sweeter than, that of ethanol (drinking alcohol). At room temperature, it is a polar liquid, and is used as an antifreeze, solvent, fuel, and as a denaturant for ethanol. It is also used for producing biodiesel via transesterification reaction. Question Methanol is produced by reaction of carbon monoxide，carbon dioxide and hydrogen . The overall chemical equation is: side reaction is react at the same time: There is a reactor. The flow of feed material is 1000kg/h .The composition of synthesis gas at 1atm and 40℃ is 42% of CO,22% of CO2,12% of H2, 18% of H2O,4% of CH4 and 2% of ash.Then the synthesis gas is compressed to 5.5MPa and 90℃. And then it is heated to 225℃.After compressing and heating, synthesis gas reacts in the reactor. After reacting,we can get outlet gas at 5.5MPa and 255℃.The relative humidity of outlet gas is 17.7%.The once-through conversion of CO , CO2 and H2 in the reactor is 85%,40% and 45%.After the condensation separation of the outlet gas,we can get crude methanol and recycling.The recycling is mixed with synthesis gas. The crude methanol is put into a rectifying column.The methanol of the crude methanol is 60%. And the total concentration of CO , CO2 , H2 and CH4 is 20%. Finally, we can get the product and effluent. The methanol of the product is 85%.And CO , CO2 , H2 and ash is 0.1%, 0.3%, 0.1% and 0.05%.The methanol of the effluent is 3%.
