The falling of American dream ------female characters in The Great Gatsby As the title character and protagonist of the novel, Gatsby always catches the most attention from the readers, nevertheless, no matter how fabulously wealthy and powerful he is or how sympathetically and pitifully he ends , the fact is that both his initial success and tragic ending result from two female characters ---Daisy and Myrtle, the former one witnesses and shares his glories, also being the rooted cause of his tragedy and the later one leads to his death directly. My paper mainly focus on the American dreams and I believe in this novel different characters holds various American dreams, in whichever method , they persue their dreams at any cost. It is the same with Daisy and Myrtle. For one thing ,they decorate other male characters’ American dreams ; for another thing , they have their own dreams despite of the fragmentized ending. I would like to demonstrate the falling American dream from these two female character. To begin with, what dose American dream stands for ? To put it briefly, it is the belief that every American could pursue individuals value, optimism, dream of democracy and freedom, the need of realism and practicality, which was rooted deeply in every American’s heart . As a proper noun, it has existed for a long time. Just as what has been written in the second sentence of the United States Declaration of Independence, all men are created equal and that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights including Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. ①It conveys a positive implication that if people can work through their own hard work, courage, creativity and determination to move towards prosperity, they will obtain ultimate happiness.
