Key words: Edna, character, reason of awakening, feminism Ⅰ.Introduction: The Awakening, written by Kate Chopin, is a remarkable work of feminism and it enjoys an eminent status among feminist critics. The novel captures the essence of the women’s struggle for freedom, equality and independence. However, in an era when traditional forces were still prevailing and overwhelmingly powerful, both Chopin and the novel received vehemently adverse and hostile attacks. With the development of womens movement in the 1960s, the novel was rediscovered and came to be considered a landmark in the nineteenth century American literature. The novel depicts how, Edna, a conventional housewife without individual autonomy comes to her awakening and develops into a new woman with a heartfelt concern for freedom and independence. Despite the difficulty of determining a new identity in a society where great pressure is placed on women to maintain the conventional social function, Edna manages to resist conventional responsibilities of a wife and a mother, to achieve a level of autonomy, self-growth, personal identity, and spiritual awakening.
