Ford Regius Professor of Divinity and Director, Cambridge Inter-Faith Programme University of Cambridge Outline Introduction Why Inter-Faith Engagement Matters The World Religious Picture 4 billion or so people involved in the major religions The shaping of lives, communities and civilisations – past, present and future Most serious conflicts in the world linked to religion – why? The Modern Historical Picture Massive changes in recent centuries affecting all areas of life and all religions The major religions all deeply rooted in premodernity. How do their members respond to modernity? - Some want no change or to try to go back to a previous age - Some assimilate to modernity and lose continuity with their roots - Some attempt partly to affirm modernity, partly to reject it, and partly to transform it. These are especially open to inter-faith engagement The Global Higher Education Picture Twentieth century explosion in knowledge, academic disciplines, and information, and also in universities and other higher education institutions. Universities especially important in ‘learning society’ and ‘knowledge economy’. In a complexly religious and secular world there is a need for religious and secular universities where religions are engaged with in relation to each other and to modernity 2. Two Recent Inter-Faith Initiatives i) Dabru Emet: A Jewish Statement on Christians and Christianity (see handout and ) ii) A Common Word Between Us and You (see handout and for full text and responses) 3. What is needed for the future? Such statements are a first step. Statements need processes Processes need practices of engagement, such as forms of dialogue, study and collaboration. E.g. Scriptural Reasoning Processes and practices need institutional settings at all
