We’ve left Eden I believe we used to be na飗e, like the beautiful water lily floating in the white mist of moonlight. I believe we used to be good, because god made us all with his own fine hands. I believe we used to be loveable, until we started to learn what we are. I believe we used to be happy all the time, before we left Eden. They say forbidden fruit is the sweetest, not telling us it’s also a poison. They say we will gain intelligence from it, not telling us it’s at a cost of losing happiness forever. God said we shall pay for what we’ve done, and so we wandered across the enormous wilderness, not knowing where to go. And now, we wake up from the long nightmare of Eden, only to find ourselves cold and lonely, longing for a paradise just like Eden. Yes, that’s what we are, selfish egoists under the mask of civilization, lily-white souls stained with sins, and poor lambs trembling in devil’s claws. Or, like Katherine Mansfield making the man confess, 揝uch egoists, so self-engrossed, so wrapped up in ourselves that we hadne’t a corner in our hearts for anybody else? ?We are kind people. You contended. Well, I canse’t deny that. We’re indeed kind people. None of us want to throw Jewry out of this planet, or bomb NYC or Pentagon into a bunch of ruins, or bury hundreds of thousands of scholars under earth with the culture of a whole country. We are kind people, indeed. We work hard to support a family, we give our seats to senior citizens in a bus, we donate money to charity, and some of us even go to church every week. But unfortunately, kindness is not all about our nature. Apparently, we’ve got something else, some teeny-weeny faults which torture us and keep us from happiness all the time, say, vanity, narcissism, arrogance, well, maybe even more.
