His study at Bowdoin College in 1822—25, a classmate of Nathaniel Hawthorne. His father asked him to study the law, but he had little interest in it. He excelled at languages. Upon graduation, he was offered a place as professor of modern languages at his Alma Mater. 3. His first European tour (1826--29) in France, Spain, Italy, and Germany, with the purpose of qualifying himself for a professorship offered by Bowdoin. 4. During 1829—35, a professor teaching French and Spanish and lectured on the literature of the Middle Ages, and librarian at Bowdoin College. 5. In1835, new appointment as professor of modern languages at Harvard entailed his 2nd European tour to focus on German and Scandinavian languages. He returned in the fall of 1836. 6. His 1st marriage (1831--35). Marry Porter, his wife died after a miscarriage in Rotterdam, Holland during their first tour in Europe. 7. His 2nd marriage (1843--61). Frances Appleton, the daughter of a wealthy cotton-mill proprietor, the prototype of the heroine of Hyperion (1839), his prose romance, died of a fatal burn. 8. During 1836—1854, a professor and chairman of modern languages at Harvard, and a significant figure in the literary and social life of Cambridge. During these years he became one of an intellectual triumvirate（三人领导小组） that included Oliver Wendell Holmes and James Russell Lowell, and one of the culturally approved “Fireside Poets (besides the two poets above, there are two other
