Kennedy, another leader who supported civil rights and helped people to free themselves. He too died young, assassinated like Lincoln. The third one is a great speaker, Martin Luther king, another civil-rights leader who died young, once again assassinated. And finally is Bobby Kennedy, John Kennedy’s brother, another supporter of civil-rights. He was running for president when, like his brother before him, he too was gunned down. Cultural Background 1. the Underground Railroad: (1)? a secret system used in the US before the Civil War for helping thousands of slaves to escape to the free northern states or Canada. The slaves were called “passengers”, the people who helped them were “conductors”, and the slaves hid in “stations” (safe houses) along the way.
