Definition A comparison presents two or more subjects, considers them together, and shows in what ways they are alike; a contrast shows how they differ. People make comparison and contrast every day, though they may not be aware of it. In a shop, the shop assistant may contrast two products to show the superiority of one to the other. At a book store, a student may compare and contrast the similarities and differences of two dictionaries in order to decide which one to buy. This strategy of writing is not only used in Exposition but also in Description and Narration. II. The function of the Comparison and Contrast Strategies To present information about something unfamiliar by comparing it with something familiar. To show the superiority of one thing by comparing it with another. To show readers of the similarities and differences of the two things to help the readers understand or evaluate them. III. Principles for using the strategies of Comparison and Contrast In a paper, you may entirely deal with similarities (comparison) or yu may deal with differences (contrast).However, comparison and contrast often go together in an essay, with stress on one or the other. When we write in such a way, we must keep in mind that; 1. Only items (usually two) of the same general class can be compared or contrasted, the items of different class can not be used in such a way. 2. A comparison and contrast essay usually follows one of these two patterns: the subject-by-subject pattern (Block Pattern) and the point –by- point pattern (Alternative Pattern) In Block pattern, or the Subject-by-subject pattern, the writer discusses the various aspects of one item before going on to the other. Such as in the example showing bellow: X is a better school than Y Stone’s Restaurant is
