Saint Patricks Day is a cultural and religious holiday celebrated on 17，March. It commemorates Saint Patrick (c. AD 387–461), the most commonly recognised of the patron saints(守护神 )of Ireland, and the arrival of Christianity (基督教) in Ireland. Saint Patricks Day has come to be associated with everything Irish: anything green and gold, shamrocks (三叶草）and luck. Most importantly, to those who celebrate its intended meaning, St. Patricks Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal(获得新生 )and offering prayers for missionaries(传教士） worldwide. Saint Patrick was the patron saint（ 保护神）and national apostle（信徒） of Ireland who is credited with bringing christianity to Ireland. Most of what is known about him comes from his two works, the Confessio（忏悔录）， a spiritual autobiography, and his Epistola（使徒书）, a denunciation （谴责）of British mistreatment of Irish christians. Saint Patrick described himself as a most humble-minded（谦逊） man, pouring forth （传布力量）a continuous paean（赞美歌） of thanks to his Maker for having chosen him as the instrument whereby multitudes （群众）who had worshipped idols（ 圣像）and unclean things had become the people of God. Saint Patrick is most known for driving the snakes from Ireland. It is true there are no snakes in Ireland, but there probably never have been - the island was separated from the rest of the continent at the end of the Ice Age. Shamrocks 三叶草 Leprechauns 绿衣矮老人 the symbol of the festival A kind of oxalis (酢浆草)with three slices of heart-shaped leaves representing the Holy Trinity —— Heavenly Father, Christ child and Heavenly Ghost in religion(宗教上三位一体 －天父、圣婴及圣灵的重要教义 ). Therefore shamrocks (三叶草)became the symbol of the Ireland. And finding the shamrock with four leaves is the symbol of good fortune. Leprechauns (小矮人)is the role of legend. They are shoemakers of faery(精灵) who are very short but move fast. And they like playing tricks on people. Like to tie people’s two shoelaces(鞋带) together, then they will fall down when standing up.
