Acknowledgements Thanks for giving me this chance to achieve this paper and to make the conclusion for my four years’ education. Through writing this paper, I have gained more knowledge than I supposed. My sincere thanks are due to my supervisor, Miss. Yu for helping me to clarify my thought and sharpen my thinking. Here, I also want to give my thanks to other teachers and my classmates who gave me much help. Thank you! Abstract With the rapid development of the world and the new curriculum standards of China, more and more people have realized the necessity of cultivating lifelong learning ability. This paper analyzes the realities of education and the needs of the times by exploring the necessity of cultivating students’ independent learning ability. Explaining the concept of autonomous learning ability is also a way to cultivate the students’ independent learning ability. This paper analyzes the roles of teachers and students in English teaching to elaborate how to foster students’ learning ability. Finally, it is certificated through the ways of questionnaires, interviews, theory and practice of teaching that independent learning capabilities can stimulate students’ interests in learning English and improve learning outcomes effectively. The important targets of quality education are to transform education philosophy and reform the way of the education to cultivating students’ independent learning ability. Independent learning is a kind of ability to taking charge of one’s own learning. Teachers’ main targets are to cultivate learner’s autonomy ability and lifelong learning ability. The traditional teacher-centered teaching obviously cannot fit the demand for learner’s autonomy. Instead, the student-centered has been drawing more and more attention. This paper puts out the advantages of autonomous learning method and encourages more and more educators to change their traditional teaching ways. Key words: au
