In 1985 they formally launched Six Sigma on their ‘Bandit pager’ product. In 1988 Motorola was the first manufacturing company to win the US Malcolm Baldrige Quality Award. Despite the start at Motorola, the person most closely associated with Six Sigma is Jack Welch and the company is GE. Beginning in 1996, Welch began to use the GE Annual Report to provide the shareholders with a 6 sigma progress report. Today the Six Sigma improvement methodology is utilized in Research and Development as well as in service functions – such as Sales, Marketing, Finance, Information Technology, and Human Resources. All of you will be sponsored by Champions within your organizations. There are 2 classifications for Champions – Executive (includes the Senior Champion) and Deployment. These are common responsibilities for all Champions. Organizational executives who are responsible for: Sponsoring the Six Sigma project – the Deployment champion is responsible for establishing the initial Project Charter Launching the Six Sigma project Making site visits to “see the team in action” Attending the project review report-out meetings Removing barriers that are impeding project success, such as Capital Human resources “Red tape” Six Sigma will not succeed unless leadership takes on the role of Champions.
