Fortran 1) 2) Abstract Fault calculation of power system is not only one of absolutely necessary models in the power simulation system but also the basic role for designing, planning and running of power system.It is more and more important for the sake of maintaining the stability and credibility of electric power system.Along with the development of computer,it is quiet necessary and important in theory and application to seek a new fault analysis method with canonical organization, that is convenient for fault analysis and has better calculation efficiency for any condition. Firstly,this paper sdudies the mothods for fault analysis of power system respectively from the methods of sequence coordinates and phase coordinates. A canonical method for fault analysis is adopted. Secondly,this canonical method for fault analysis is deeply anatomised and researched.Neither branch cutting to deal with series faults caused by circuit breaker operation nor bus creation to process intermediate line faults is needed in this method. The pre-fault network keeps unchanged in the whole fault calculation. A local modification is carried out to simulate asymmetrical short circuitcircuit opening and reclosurewhich makes the method more suitable for computer analysis. Finally,the digital simulative software is mainly programmed with Fortran for its fitness to numerical calculation and easiness to interface with simulation platform. The program applys all kinds of electric network, and can calculate diversified faults in power system . The results of calulation example prove that the computing program is canonical, fast and exact,which is satisfactory for using in the power simulation system. Key words:s
