It measures the variability or spread of the data. 6 Sigma is also a measure of variability. It is a name given to indicate how much of the data falls within the customers’ requirements. The higher the process sigma, the more of the process outputs, products and services, meet customers’ requirements – or, the fewer the defects. Stress that, even though the wider curve may represent the established process tolerance, unless we meet the customer’s expectations, we are producing defects. In the 80’s, Motorola developed a disciplined method to apply statistical problem-solving tools in order to bring defects to 6 Sigma levels by reducing the variation in processes.
