Study on Common Skill in the Translation of the Thesis Abstract Name Class 0901 Supervisor 王欣 Date 2012/7/1 Study on Common Skill in the Translation of the Thesis Abstract Recently, we study on some abstract translation of Chinese scientific and technological paper. I try to discuss some of the most common techniques on science and technology academic English abstract writing. Ⅰ. How to choose proper words It is important premise to choose the correct words that guarantee the quality of translation. We must notice following aspects about translation. Firstly, according to the correct understanding of the meaning of the original context, translator should choose words that are closer to the original meaning. Choosing correct words depends on correctly understanding to original meaning of text words. As we know, the vocabulary of English for science and technology(EST) is different from common words. It include too much technical term and jargon. We must carefully use these words and can’t interpret out of context. Secondly, translator should pay attention to use written words. In addition to the use of specialized vocabulary, EST translation still like using some written words called big words, which could reflect the officially, the solemnity of the stylistic features of EST words. For example, EST translation use “many” instead of “a lot of “ or “lots of”, “obtain” instead of “get” and “finally” instead of “at last” or “in the end”. It should avoid some words like “carry out”, “make up” but use “perform” and “invent” and so on. Finally, it could use noun to replace verb. There are some common words like that, such as, analysis, comparison, study, and introduction and so on. The common structure is “make/give…+noun (analysis…)+prep”, which is equal to verb. For example, make a study of =study, make an analysis of = analyze, and give an introduction to = introduce. Ⅱ.How to match the word Chinese and English two languages used for
