PHRASAL VERBS IDIOMS
We look at some poker phrasal verbs and an expanded idiom section. Ready to be dealt in?
to deal out (something)
1) To give cards to each player e.g.:
The dealer dealt out seven cards to each player.
2) To share something among a group of people or organizations e.g.:
The lottery winnings will be dealt out amongst all five winners.
3) To give someone a particular punishment e.g.:
Some people believe a harsher punishment should be dealt out to white collar criminals.
to deal in (something)
1) To include someone in an activity e.g.:
If youre planning on climbing Mr. Fuji this Sunday, Rob, then deal me in, too.
2) To involve the main aspect of ones business. It is often used in a criminal sense too e.g.:
That guy deals in used cars. OR
The mafia never used to deal in drugs, but now they do.
IDIOM:
1) call ones bluff
This means to expose someones deception and consequently to invite a showdown. This term comes from
poker, where bluffing means pretending. We bluff when we feel we have better cards than our opponent,
but it can be applied to any situation e.g.:
My wife says shell divorce me if I take the job in Chicago, but I think I might have to call her bluff.
2A) to pass the buck
In poker to keep things fair, you rotate the dealer. And the person whos next in line to deal, is given a marker.
In the 19th century, the marker was often a knife. And knives often had handles made of buck, (bucks or
deers horn) and so hence the marker became known as a buck. This idiom means to pass the responsibility
to somebody else e.g.:
Some people say George Bush wants to prolong the Iraq War, so he can pass the buck to the next
president.
2B) the buck stops here
To show where the responsibility rests, or who is ultimately
