Notes on “Attaining Exuberance in Your Career with Toastmasters” In the Meeting #180 of 5A+ Professional Speakers Shanghai Toastmasters Club on April 16, 2014 Sharing Expert: Kitty Wong, DTM Everyone wants a happy work life, and everyone wants to work well with his/her boss. Kitty Wong successfully enhanced the trust with her boss and got a promotion after she used the skills learnt in Toastmasters. Kitty shared with us the 2 real-life stories in her workplace. When answering the questions raised by her boss, she was very confident because she took it as an opportunity of answering the Table Topics questions! The judging criteria of Table Topics Speeches are as follows: • Be logical • Have a direct appeal to the audience • Have a coherent structure When you did not know how to answer the table topics question at the beginning, you could ask the audience! When your boss gave you criticisms and suggestions for improvement, you should accept and give him/her a positive reply with an open mind. Then you could state your analysis and solution of the current situation. This is a good way to build trust with your boss and make him/her know that you are a responsible person. Such as “Sir, give me some time, I promise, I will do better.” How to make yourself happier in the workplace? Build trust with your boss! Suppose your boss said to you: “You’ve made a mistake!” How to response? Try to avoid these typical responses below: (a) Not my fault. (b) Sorry. So what? (c) Sorry, and I promise not to do that again. What can we learn from these kinds of responses? What is the underlying emotion of these responses? You got hurt and you were trying to escape from the problem evasively, defensively, or not persuasively. You could never build trust with your boss by responding these.
